Liposuction also known as lipoplasty, is a body contouring procedure that removes fat from different sites, including abdomen, thighs, hips, arms, neck and other areas and works to reshape that specific part of your body to give it a slimmer, more proportionate look.
Technique: The procedure may be performed under general, twilight or local anesthesia. Dr. Khattab of Beyond Beautiful in Torrance uses the tumescent liposuction technique which does not require general anesthesia. Tumescent technique has been proven to produce excellent cosmetic results and is remarkably safe with fast recovery time and is minimally painful, especially when compared to the alternatives.
Recovery: Some numbness and swelling are common and normal after liposuction. Time, regular exercise and gentle massage generally resolves these issues. Most patients will see results at one month after surgery but the final result will not be seen until after all swelling resolves and the tissues have had a chance to shrink which usually happens 4 to 6 months postop.
Liposuction and tightening or lifting of skin: The removal of quantities of fat from under the skin allows the elastic skin to potentially retract after liposuction. The level of skin retraction following liposuction is affected by the age of the patient, quality of skin, presence of underlying disease or smoking and the presence of previous skin damage, such as caused by childbirth and surgery.
What liposuction won't do: Liposuction surgery is not a treatment for obesity and is not a replacement for regular exercise and good eating habits. In case of sagging skin or after massive weight loss, surgical lifts such as facelift, breast lift, tummy tuck, or lower body lifts may be needed following liposuction for best results.
